Monroe studied music theory composition at Michigan State University, eventually adding a second major in music education. After considering a career as a concert pianist and composer, Monroe decided to go into the education field. He heard that Texas was the place to go to find a job, so he taught music for two years in Iowa Park, Texas followed by another two years in Irving, Texas. Monroe worked there for four years but was unhappy with his job situation. When Monroe began teaching at Midland High in , the band program was limited to 10 th th grades and consisted of 78 students. In recent years, Monroe established chamber choirs where each instrument section has its own group of players. The students tell Monroe what music they want to perform and teach themselves the music with the help of section leaders. In addition to playing at concerts, sports games and competing in Solo Ensemble festivals, the Midland High band participates in the local Marching Band Showcase, demonstrating different drills and tunes centered around a particular theme.
